SafePlace started with an idea by one of the Founders of Genesis and Senior Pastor of NSC, Trevor Downham, who had seen a similar model for places of safety in the United States of America. He decided that Genesis needed to start their own SafePlace project to address the incredible needs in our communities. In 2018, Trevor and the team started to fundraise and lay a foundation for the vision and operation of SafePlace alongside a team of advisors and the very first SafePlace project Manager, Jono Downham.
In February of 2019, the first container was opened outside of Hlanganani School, and since then we have added three more containers in neighbouring areas. The team has quickly grown, as Bailey (a social worker) and Jordan Collins (the SafePlay coordinator) joined at the beginning of 2019 as full-time volunteers who raise their support. Soon after, the team of three were able to hire four security staff, two additional social workers, and two SafePlay interns. We aim to continue partnering with government services, schools, churches, and businesses in order to grow our Project and stretch across KZN and eventually the rest of South Africa.
